Christmas time is here again and it’s a time for spending time with those you love and enjoying the festivities. Indulging in your favorite Christmas treats and cocktails is often part of what makes this time of year so special. It’s no surprise that your oral health may not be at the top of your priority list during this time of year. While we all want to enjoy every aspect of what Christmas such a memorable holiday here are a few dental tips that can help you save a lot of time and money down the road.
1. Curb the grazing behaviors!
Eat your treats in one sitting if possible. Eating throughout the day is very easy to find yourself doing during the holidays due to the vast amounts of delicious treats at your fingertips. This constant exposure of your teeth to sugar can be disastrous for your oral health and lead to costly repairs in the future. Try polishing off those goodies in one or two main sittings which will allow you to minimize bathing your teeth in sugar for long periods of time.
2. Watch out for the Prosecco!
Prosecco, due to its high sugar content, high acidity and alcohol levels is one of the most damaging drinks for the teeth if consumed frequently. Chase that Prosecco with some water to not only flush those damaging elements of the Prosecco from your mouth but to also keep you hydrated!
3. Carry Floss!
Getting that turkey stuck between your teeth while at a family member’s house is an annoying situation that everyone has been in. Using an improvised took to stab at your teeth and gums can be very damaging. Floss comes in wonderfully compact and portable packaging. Carrying your own floss can be a lifesaver on Christmas day when this situation inevitably occurs.
4. Remember Your Teeth Aren’t Tools
We have all been in that situation where we are wrapping Christmas gifts and forget to get out the scissors and decide whether or not to tear the tape with our teeth. You typically put an enormous amount of pressure on the sharp edges of your teeth when trying to tear tape which can be extremely damaging to your teeth. Also, never open bottles of wine or champagne with your teeth. It can often seem like a harmless idea but can lead to major damage.
5. Stick To Brushing Your Teeth
Christmas is an extremely busy time of year for everyone but it is essential to not forget the most basic of all dental care, brushing your teeth. It can often be helpful to brush the first thing in the morning to avoid forgetting later on.
It’s time to enjoy the most wonderful time of year. Don’t forget to give your teeth a little attention, which is the only thing they want for Christmas.
