Periodontal Disease in Sugar Land, TX

Periodontal Disease in Sugar Land, TX

Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums, the tissues that support your teeth and keep them in place. This disease is often caused by infections brought about by poor oral hygiene practices like inadequate brushing and faulty flossing. These poor practices enable plaque to accumulate and become tartar, which brings about the infection. If left untreated, this could bring about bleeding gums, pain while chewing, and ultimately tooth loss.

Dr. Ali Sajadi, DDS, MSD is our periodontist at Edgewater Dental. As such, one of his specializations is gum health and dental hygiene. So, if you are experiencing problems in your gums, Dr. Sajadi can address this and restore your gums and mouth to health.

How Can You Tell if You Have Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a serious but preventable disease. And if detected early, can be cured. So watch out for these symptoms:

  • Gums are swelling or are puffy.
  • Gums are dark red or purple instead of being healthy pink.
  • Gums bleed when you brush your teeth.
  • Bad breath
  • Pain when you chew
  • Spaces are widening between teeth
  • Gums recede from the teeth
  • Pus appears between the gums and teeth

If you experience any of these symptoms, see us to check for periodontal disease.

How Is it Treated?

Depending on the extent of the disease, Dr. Sajadi could recommend and perform one of the following treatments:

  • Scaling and Root Planing

If the periodontal disease is in its early stages, it could be treated with a thorough cleaning off of the harmful bacteria by scaling and root planing. Using an ultrasonic scaling tool, the periodontist will remove the tough tartar from the parts of the tooth that are under the gums and at the tooth roots. Then the roots themselves will be smoothed out to prevent plaque and bacteria from forming.

  • Gum Line Recontouring

This procedure reshapes the gums to eliminate the pockets of space between the gums and the teeth. These spaces are often where bacteria accumulate, causing infection.

  • Gum Grafting

If the periodontal disease has progressed to the point that the gums have receded and exposed the tooth roots, gum grafting may be performed to cover the roots and keep them from being infected.
